During the beginning Monday, 8th June, Year 4 pupils will participate in the statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). This national assessment is designed to determine whether pupils can fluently recall their multiplication tables up to 12×12.

Assessment Format

The check is an online, digital assessment consisting of 25 questions. Pupils will have 6 seconds to read and answer each question. The assessment is completed on a laptop or tablet and usually takes less than five minutes per pupil.

Purpose of the Check

The MTC identifies pupils who may require additional support to master their times tables. Fluent recall of multiplication facts is a fundamental skill that supports many other areas of the mathematics curriculum, including fractions, area, and long multiplication.

Attendance and Absence

It is important that pupils are present during the week of the 8th of June to complete the check with their peers. However, if a child is absent due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances, there is a dedicated catch-up window. Any pupils who miss the initial week will be able to sit the test during the following week.

Key Information for Parents

  • Preparation: We continue to practice times tables daily in class. At home, pupils are encouraged to use Times Table Rockstars to build speed and confidence.

  • Approach: The assessment is administered in a low-stakes environment. We aim to make the process as stress-free as possible for the children.

  • Results: The results are used by the school to provide appropriate support. Individual scores will be communicated to parents and carers at the end of the summer term.
