This summer I shall be to going to Calais to volunteer with a charity called Care4Calais. This is a UK and French registered charity founded by a group of volunteers that aims to deliver essential aid and support to refugees in Northern France and other areas, and to encourage the wider public to be more welcoming towards refugees. There are currently over 3,000 refugees living in tents and shelters in parks around Calais and Dunkirk. They have nothing – except for the clothes they were wearing when they fled their country.
A number of schools across the country have got involved in helping child refugees and I would like our school to do the same. I held an assembly today about the work the charity does and why it is so important; the children are now very excited to get involved.
I would like the children to bring in donations which I will then take directly to the children in the refugee camps in France. I would like the children to make up bags (back packs or draw-string if possible) containing some or all of the following items:
• Packets of dried fruit
• Packets of nuts
• Cereal bars
• Tooth brush and tooth paste
• Wet wipes
• Socks and pants (new only please)
• Jogging bottoms/trousers
